Creative Guest: Ballard Design Art Tutorial by Thrifty Decor Chick

Hello all! It's Sarah here from Thrifty Decor Chick! I am honored to be guest posting on Ucreate today! Kari asked me to share a craft project with you, and I just couldn't resist sharing one of my all time favorite projects, which is also one of the easiest and cheapest I've done.

I have a serious obsession with Ballard Designs decor, but more often than I should probably admit, I find I can recreate their items on my own for a fraction of the price:
I saw this one months ago, and I had the supplies I would need to recreate it for a loooong time. I mean, a LONG time. I kept hesitating because of my new found fear of mod podge. I was sceered.

It bubbles up EVERY time I use it. It drives me batty. I bought a fun new tool to keep it from happening with this project, but in the end, I decided to just go with my trusty spray adhesive and it worked great!

This project is SOOOO easy and will take you about an hour to do. You'll need 12x12 paper -- I got this large book on sale awhile back for $9. But this would be even cheaper if you just bought the paper in singles:
I had a ten foot MDF board cut down into one foot pieces at Lowe's:
And used a brown spray paint to spray the sides and the edges:
Then spray adhesived (my made up word) the crap outta them -- the back of the paper and the front of the board. I let them both set up for about a minute, then just placed the paper on each board:
I stacked them on each other as they dried to make sure everything stayed where it should.

To hang them, I nailed them right into the wall, instead of putting brackets on the back (all those holes will be REAL fun if I ever decide to take them down):I love it! I bought trim to do the edges like Ballard, but in the end decided they didn't need it:
I've seen this done on other blogs, and I think most people use canvases. I was being cheap -- all the wood for this was less than $10. Total with the wood, paper and spray paint, this cost less than $25. The Ballard version is $200!:
My version for $25:
I LOVE when I can save $175. ;)
Thanks for having me Kari! For more of my thrifty decorating and crafts, come visit me at my place, Thrifty Decor Chick.

Creative Guest: Cupcake Burp Cloth Tutorial by Small Fry & Co.

Hi everyone. This is Heather from Small Fry & Co. I am so excited to be Kari's guest blogger for today. I am a stay at home mom of one little miss Small Fry and have baby #2 ( another girl) on the way in about 8 weeks. So right now at Small Fry & Co it is all about babies and baby stuff. I do however love making all sorts of crafts (especially sewing). Before I had Small Fry I was a High School Home Economics teacher so homemaking is just in my blood. My blog is a place for me to share and ramble. It is something that I started doing as an outlet for me and now I can't be stopped. Come by and visit sometime.

Kari asked me to share a tutorial for these cupcake burp cloths. I came up with this idea while putting together a bunch of baby stuff to sell at a local festival. I wanted a unique way to package some ordinary burp cloths that I had made. I came up with this idea.
Supplies you will need:

A burp cloth (I made mine, you could use a store bought one but you might have to play around with the tutorial to make it work. One like the one pictured below works best for this tutorial)

A piece of flannel about 15" X 3" This is purely for a filler and not to be used for anything after the fact. (fleece works really well too only you will only need a piece about 1 1/2 " wide)

Ribbon ( mine was 1 1/2" wide)

Straight pins

Decorations for the top.

Step 1: Iron about 1 inch of one end to the wrong side of the burp cloth.

Step 2: Fold the burp cloth in half (wrong sides together) and press with and iron (the ironing is essential to make these)

Step 3: Fold in half again and press with an iron.

Step 4: (omit this step if using fleece) Fold the flannel in half and press with an iron.

Step 5: Begin rolling one end of the flannel to create the center of the cupcake. The crease should be to the top.

Step 6: With the crease of the flannel at the top and the crease of the burp cloth at the top, match the rolled end of the flannel to the end of the burp cloth that you DIDN'T fold over in the first step.

Step 7: Begin rolling the two pieces together. A couple of side notes: you want to keep this as tight as possible, if you want the center of the cupcake raised you can put the piece of flannel slightly higher than the burp cloth to begin, the flannel will magically seem to grow as you roll the cupcake. Don't worry about this. Also if you are having a hard time keeping everything together you can pin the flannel to the burp cloth from the bottom edge and after everything is rolled together take it out.

Step 8: Rolling continues. Notice how the flannel is longer than the burp cloth now. I don't know why that happens but we will take care of it. Also the bottom of your cupcake may not look that great when completed but who is going to look at the bottom when you make the top so cute.

Step 9: Here is my top view. I tried this putting two burp cloths together but my end product was much too large and bulky and it was really hard to roll. That is when I came up with the flannel strip instead to add some contrast and make the cupcake a bit larger. I would be interested to see what others can come up with to make these. Such creative women out there. Let me know if you make it work another way. I would love to see.

Step 10: Cut off the excess flannel just past the end of the burp cloth.

Step 11: Secure the ends to the cupcake with a couple of straight pins. And yes if yours looks like this you didn't do anything wrong. I made a bunch of these and could never get the end to look even and neat. But we are going to decorate it next so not to worry.

Step 12: Measure a piece of ribbon long enough to go all the way around your cupcake and overlap. I cut the edge of mine with pinking shears.

Step 13: Cut a coordinating piece of ribbon for decoration the same length. Ric rac looks cute too. Secure these to the cupcake with a couple of pins. If you have ones with colored heads that you don't mind giving away they look cute but straight pins work well also.

Step 14: Lastly decorate. I used these little scrapbooking flowers that I had around. I also cut out some shapes with a Cricut machine and taped them to toothpicks to make cupcake toppers for some of the ones I made (that worked great for my boy sets).

Secure your flowers with some pins and tada...you're done.

They look really cute nested inside a cupcake liner. I think a set of 3 or 4 of these would make a great shower gift.

Enjoy everyone.
Thanks again to Kari for letting me guest post today. This totally made my day. Remember to stop by my blog for more ideas. Happy crafting.
