Creative Guest: Chalkboard Mugs Tutorial by Fireflies and Jellybeans

Hello U Create! I am SO excited to be here, guest blogging, today! I feel like I am on the Oprah Show! I love U Create and I am honored to be part of it!

Let me introduce myself!

I am Fawnda from Fireflies and Jellybeans a little DIY blog that I co-author with my best friend Jeannine.

We have all sorts of fun projects to try and we love to figure out new things!

Today I have a very special project just for you! I know that Christmas is only 2 days away... and New Years is right around the corner!

These CUTE chalkboard mugs will be perfect for any party!

They are easy to make!

Here is what you will need:
Mugs (either new or ones you already have!)
Painter's tape
Sand paper (Probably not really needed- But some primers suggest to sand before you put next layer of paint on)
Primer (not pictured)
Chalkboard paint (you can get this at most hardware, or craft stores)

1. Tape off your mug where you want your chalkboard rectangle to be.

2. Prime you mug in the area you taped off. Let primer dry according to the label. (I tried to sand before I primed to "rough up" the surface of the mug... but it did not work that great...I don't think that it is needed.. Also some primers suggest sanding between layers)

3. After the primer is dry, paint on your first layer of chalkboard paint. Let dry according to label.

4. Paint on your second coat of chalk board paint. Let dry and cure according to the label.

5. Remove the painter's tape.

6. Rub some chalk all over the area you painted and wipe off to set the chalkboard paint up.

Invite your friend over for some nice warm drinks!

Or you can write the name of the drink on the mug...

Or write your blog name!

Thanks Kari for letting me come to your blog today! It was great fun!

Be sure to stop by Fireflies and Jellybeans for more fun and creating!

**Note: these mugs are now HAND wash only***

Creative Guest: Grapevine Snowman Tutorial by Livin' the Simple Life

Hey y'all! My name's Jenn, and I'm here visiting from my little blog called Livin' the Simple Life. I'm an avid DIY-er, a newlywed, and am in the process of taking our first place from house to home. I'm sooo excited and honored to be here as a guest, in the company of some of my favorite bloggers. I can't wait to share with you a new holiday project I've been working on - a super easy and adorable snowman!

I had a ton of grapevine balls leftover from our wedding, and they've been stashed away for a rainy day. I decided to use a few for some holiday crafts - I love grapevine and how versatile and fun it is to work with.

Start with 3 balls - one large, one medium, and one small. Create a "nest" in the large ball by cutting a 2" hole and nestle the medium ball into it. Do the same to the medium ball and nestle the small ball into it. I secured them even more by twisting small pieces of floral wire on either side of the seams.

Next, spray paint them with ivory spray paint (you could use stark white, but I wanted something just a little more subdued). Once the paint is dry, hot glue the bottom ball to a base - I used a dollar store tray that I painted with maroon spray paint.

Tuck little Christmas picks around the snowman's base and hot glue them to the tray. I added a few snowy pine cones, too.

projects 043

Using a glue gun, add two black buttons for eyes, and make arms out of sticks (don't worry if your neighbors think you're crazy while you hunt in the yard for the perfect sticks while wearing your pj's in 50 degree weather - it's all in the name of holiday crafting!). Wedge them into a hole in the grapevine and glue for extra security.

projects 018

Make a little scarf from yarn scraps by cutting 15 or so 12" lengths of multi-colored yarn and glue it around your snowman's neck.

A little top hat made of felt brought my little snowman to life! Cut out two circles, one large and one small, and a long rectangle. Hot glue the rectangle into a cylinder, then glue a circle to the top and bottom. Add a few little red berries for decoration (just pull 'em off your picks you used for the base) and glue it to the top ball.

Isn't he sweet? He now hangs out next to the fireplace, under our stockings.

  • 2 medium-sized buttons
  • 1 spool of yarn
  • 2 small sticks

  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks

Feel free to come visit me at Livin' the Simple Life to see more projects, decorating ideas, and last-minute holiday crafts, I'd love to meet you all! A special thanks to Kari for having me, and happy holidays!!!

Creative Guest: Floating Frame Tutorial by HowDoesShe

HowDoesShe is so excited to be featured today on U-Create {aka the Oprah of Crafting}. Being invited to contribute to all of the U-Create goodness going on here is truly an honor!

We are awe struck by all the amazing things women around us do---from balancing a healthy lifestyle, to throwing the perfect party, to implementing creative ideas with family. We always seem to be asking, "How Does She do this, or How Does She do that?" While none of us is perfect, we all seem to be striving to become better. Better mothers, better wives, better women...HowDoesShe.com. Our goal is to Unite Inspirational Women and Share Inspirational Ideas. So please hop on over, check out our site and share your great ideas!

Today we are sharing a Tutorial especially for U-Create readers! This Floating Frame is beautiful to display, unique, and easy to make!

What you'll need:
*1- 18x24 frame of choice with glass included (I found mine at Michaels,...don't forget your coupons)
*1- 18x24 additional piece of cut glass (call your local glass or plexi-glass shop for a custom cut. My piece cost me about $10)
*1- 8x10 Family Picture
*1- 8x10 Document of choice (Family Motto, Proclamation to Family, Another picture?)
*2- 8x10 Pieces of Vellum paper
*Ink Distress Pad
*Vinyl Lettering of choice
*Ribbon of choice
*Hot Glue Gun
*Tape

Unpackage your 18x24 frame and set aside.

Place your custom cut 18x24 piece of glass (or plexi glass) on the table. This is what you will be taping everything to.Cut down your family picture and your document so it is slightly smaller than the 8x10 Vellum paper, leaving a nice border.Ink Distress the edges on both sheets of vellum, the family picture, and the document.Use two sided sticky tape and place the picture, document, and ribbon on the custom cut 18x24 glass sheet.Flip your finished glass sheet over and place it in your 18x24 frame (with original glass included). Both glass sheets will lay on top of each other in the frame like this. Use a hot glue gun in the four corners to hold the glass in the frame. Throw out the cardboard back that usually holds glass in place. Let Dry.Flip the frame over so you are looking at it correctly. Add Custom Vinyl to the top of the original glass in the frame. (Use your Cricut, or U-Create recommends using ScribbleIt and HowDoesShe uses MyTalkingWalls. You can usually find someone locally as well).{Tada!}Display for all to see and be proud you made it! Easy as pie! And such a beautiful personalized gift to give! {Both my in-laws and parents are receiving one this year,...hopefully they aren't looking} ;)

U-Create, Thank you for having us. We are seriously tickled about it!
