Creative Guest: Budget Beautiful DIY

budget beautiful DIY

Hello! My name is Alicia and I have the blog Budget Beautiful DIY.

profile pic

Four years ago, I left a career as a hairstylist in a gorgeous salon to stay home with my two munchkins. Going from two incomes to just one has brought out my creative side not only with finances, but also with fun handmade projects. Between changing diapers, attempts at cooking, and reading books to my kids, I whip up little crafts to bring a touch beauty to our lives.

frayed rosette headband tutorial

Supplies List:
-fabric
-needle and thread
-headband (I used one covered in fabric from Target)
-hot glue gun
-button, vintage earring, or rhinestones

Make sure all your strips are cut on the bias (on the "bias" means to cut your fabric on an angle so the threads in the fabric are running on the diagonal). This way you don't have strings shedding off your headband.

step 1

Cut one strip of fabric 2" X 9"
Cut two strips of fabric 1 1/2"  X 9"
Cut two more strips as long as you can make them 1" wide to wrap your headband with.

step 2

Step One: Take the widest strip and fold in half lengthwise about 3/4 of the way as in the picture.

step 3
Step Two: Sew along the long folded edge and pull the stitching to gather it.
step 4

Step Three: Sew the short ends together so you have a ring.

step three

Step Four: Squash the circle a little to make an oval and sew the middle together on the backside so it stays an oval shape.

step four

Step Five: Repeat steps 1-4 on the 1 1/2 " strips.
Now you should have three ovals that look like this.

step 5

Step Six: Fray the edges of the ovals by pulling on the fabric with your fingers.

step six

Step Seven: Fray one side of your long 1" strips. Then simply wrap your headband in the strips of fabric pulling the fabric a little so it forms to the arch of the band. Wrap at a slight angle and overlap just a little. I put a dab of hot glue on the underside of the headband with each wrap of fabric.
If you need both strips to completely cover the headband, place your "seam" on the top  where you'll be gluing your rosettes.

step seven
Step Eight: Hot glue the ovals onto your headband placing them a little to the side. The largest oval should slightly overlap the smaller ones. If you'd like, add a button, rhinestones, or a vintage earring like I did.

You’re finished!

Creative Guest: DIY Giant Buttons by Kami at No Biggie

Hi Ucreate Readers! I'm Kami from NoBiggie. I'm so excited to be Kari's creative guest today! I love Kari! I always love to see what she shares. On my list of Ucreate craft ideas to try: - DIY Baker's Twine - Kid's Play Tent

We recently redid our front room to be my craft room, and I made this "Make Stuff" sign for the wall. To go along with the sign, I wanted to make some giant buttons. I also found this giant pair of scissors at my local craft store (that I spray painted gold) to go along with them. Today I want to share with you how to make these giant buttons.

DIY Giant Buttons What you need: - 3 styro foam discs (I have one that is larger than the other two) - 3 styro foam rings (these match the sizes of the discs) - 1 styro foam cutter - 1 bottle of Magikote by DecoArt - paint or spray paint (colors of your choice) - hot glue gun - pencil - something round to trace smaller circles To start, you need to cut 4 small circles in the styro foam discs to make them resemble giant buttons.

To do this, grab a pencil and something small and round to trace. I had these chipboard circles that worked great.

Next you will need to use this styro foam cutter. This tool is about $20 at the craft store. It is really neat. it makes it possible to make a clean cut into styro foam as it burns a hole into the styro foam where ever you place the tip of the tool.

As you can see here, it cut the circles out clean...with ease too (I might add). I know I will be using this tool a bunch more in the future with my kids school projects.

Once you have the circles cut out, you will start coating the styro foam with Magikote. This stuff makes the styro foam look and feel smooth so that you can paint right over it. It does take a couple of coats and some dry time in between, but the end result is neat.

Then you will hot glue the two pieces of each button together and then paint or spray paint the entire button what ever color you'd like (this is the fun part!). I ended up spray painting mine: silver, gold and red.

Then when you are all finished, you can hang them up on the wall. Pretty fun, eh?! :) Thanks Kari for having me today! *For more craft tutorials like this, I'd love to have you join me at NoBiggie! :)

Behind the Scenes: Michael’s Craft Store…{day one}

michael's creative crew

As I mentioned, I recently had the opportunity to attend the “Michael’s Creative Crew” event in Dallas, Texas. I had such a wonderful time getting a “behind the scenes” view of Michael’s Craft Stores, getting to know creative bloggers, and creating together!

I thought it would be fun to take you along for the ride and share this fun experience with you!

I just want to quickly mention that I’m in no way obligated to mention this event and all opinions are 100% mine!

We began with a meet and greet social where we met Michael’s employees, Empower media folks, and many wonderful bloggers!

You might recognize some of them…

We ended the night with a delicious Zeppole’s dinner and fabulous presentations!

I was fascinated with Tiffany Windsor’s presentation on “The History of Crafting”, probably because I’ve never thought about it before and I loved how she compared the past to the present.

Her mother is Aleene Jackson who played a huge role in the crafting industry throughout the years. You can read a bit about it at Inspired @ Home.

Few things are better in life than eating wonderful food and meeting new friends!

Stay tuned for Day Two where we dive into lots of crafting and head to Michael’s headquarters!
