Creative Guest: Swim Towel Pullover by Vanilla Joy

kelsey

I'm Kelsey from Vanilla Joy where I share sewing tutorials, quilt patterns, recipes, organization tips, and more. I especially love to sew and I'm thrilled to be sharing my Swim Towel Pullover tutorial with you today!

Keeping tabs on more than one small child at the pool can be tough, especially when it comes time to dry off and go home. My boys were constantly dropping or tripping over their towels on the way to the car, so I came up with a pullover swim towel version that makes the dry off/go home routine much smoother! Here's what you'll need to make a Swim Towel Pullover:

  • one bath or beach towel (Target's Room Essentials collection is my favorite but any will do)
  • fabric marking pen
  • 1/8 yard ribbing (in coordinating color)
  • CD
  • pinking shears (optional)
  • basic sewing supplies (pins, scissors, etc.)

INSTRUCTIONS

 toddler swim towel

1. Find the very center of the towel by folding in half lengthwise and then width wise.

2. Mark with a pen or fabric marker.

 toddler beach towel

3. A CD is the perfect size template for a toddler's head opening so center the CD on the towel so that your mark is in the center hole of the CD and trace around with a removable/erasable fabric marking pen.

swimming towels

4. Cut the circle out of the center of the towel using pinking shears if you have them or regular fabric scissors if you don't.

5. Mark 4 equidistant points around the circle with pins.

toddler towel

6. Cut ribbing for neck band - 2" x 13" is a good size (for an average child's head) for kid's up to about age 5. For a more exact fit, measure your child's head and subtract 6 or 7". (Check for fit before sewing it to the towel.)

beach towel wrap

7. With right sides of the ribbing together, sew a 1/4" seam along the short side of the ribbing to make a circular band.

ribbing for neck band

8. Press or finger press the seam open.

9. Fold neck band in half with wrong sides together and mark 4 equidistant points with pins. 10. Pin the neckband to the towel (right sides together) by matching up the 4 pins on the towel with the 4 pins on the neckband.

towel robes

The neckband is much smaller in circumference than the hole in the towel, so you'll need to stretch the ribbing as you sew. I find that only pinning at those four points is easiest, you just have to be careful that the raw edges match up.

10. Serge or sew the ribbing to the towel.

That's it!

Not only does a Swim Towel Pullover stay put, it also keeps my boys warm and I don't have to worry about tripping or dragging in the dirt. It's an easy afternoon project and the perfect pool solution!

Creative Guest: Modern Parents Messy Kids

Hello Ucreate readers, thanks so much for having me!

I'm Steph, founder/managing editor of Modern Parents Messy Kids and mom to a 2 year old son and 13 month old daughter.  I started MPMK as a resource for helping parents to engage their kids, organize their life, and add a little style to their home.  In my former life I was a Doctor of Audiology and worked with pediatric patients, now I spend my days racking my brain and scouring the internet for simple ways to connect with my kids.  I gravitate towards anything that’s accessible to all parents (including the crafting-impaired), fosters development, and has a bit of a modern edge. Today I've got a super simple project you can get done in 5 minutes flat.  It's nothing too fancy but you'll use it everyday.  Hang it in the kitchen or home office and I guarantee you'll get more stuff done (not to mention a few compliments on your creativity).

You'll only need three simple items: a stack of colorful sticky notes, a marker, and a shadow box.  I got my shadow box from Ikea (it measures 19.5" square) but, as I'm sure you all know,  they can be found at any local craft store.
Start by labeling your top row of sticky notes.  I used the headings: Now, This Week, This Month, Whenever, and Someday because I liked how they covered all my bases.  A nice variation would be to make a calendar for weekly activities or meal planning.  (P.S. If you're wondering about the title of this post, the inspiration for the project was a sticky note to-do list I spied on pinterest.  I loved the look but wasn't a fan of how much paper would be wasted by actually using it long term - so I put the sticky notes behind glass and opted to use a dry-erase marker.)
Next layout your sticky notes in a grid.  I used the backing that came with the frame as my background but you could also go with some colored poster board.  Also, I just eye-balled it... if the idea of that makes you a little twitchy, feel free to use a ruler for perfect spacing.

Once you have the layout the way you like it, I would recommend using some glue to reinforce everything.

That's it (five minutes was probably and over-estimate).  Just hang it on the wall and feel the weight being lifted off your shoulders as you instantly morph into a more organized, and all-around better, person.  Also, don't forget to store a small dry erase marker on top for easy access.

Thanks again to Kari for having me!  I hope you'll all take a moment to stop by MPMK to say hi and check out our new Make & Play Vault.  You can also connect with us on facebook, twitter and pinterest.

Creative Guest: Bow Pouch Tutorial by “Mommy by Day…

Hi... I'm Ashley!

Ashley

I'm the mommy behind the Mommy by Day... Crafter by Night blog.

I love to craft and I love to blog so I decided to combine both loves and made my blog! It is a blog about crafting, DIY projects, creating things on a budget, and one of my newest hobbies... Sewing.
Today I am so excited to have my very first guest posting experience ever, and share my newest tutorial with all the U Create readers!

It's called my "Tied with a Bow" Pouch.
tied with a bow pouch tutorial

DIY bow pouch

It is super easy to make- especially if you have ever made a zipper pouch before!
This pouch is roughly 7x9 inches so all the measurements work with this size but it can easily be adapted to work with any size pouch you are making!

To start you will need:
-One 7 inch zipper
-2 coordinating fabrics: 1 for the outside (Yellow) and one for the inside (Polka Dot)
-Medium weight fusible interfacing
-Thread

Step 1: Cut two pieces of the yellow fabric that measure 7 x 9 inches each, 2 pieces of the polka dot fabric that measure 7 x 9 inches each, and also cut two pieces of the interfacing that measure 7 x 9 inches each.

Step 2: Iron the fusible interfacing to the wrong side of the fabric for each of your yellow pieces of fabric.

Step 3: Lay one of the yellow pieces of fabric right side up, lay the zipper right side down (facing the yellow fabric), and then lay the polka dot fabric right side down on top of the zipper. Once you have your fabric and zipper alined, sew along the top edge of the fabric/ zipper.

Step 4: Unfold fabric to uncover the zipper and do the same thing with the last piece of yellow and polka dot fabric.
When you turn the fabrics right side out it should look like this.
Yellow fabric and zipper facing right side up and the polka dot fabric underneath should be facing right side down.

Step 5: Next, cut out one piece of the yellow fabric that measures 10 x 11 inches, 2 pieces that measure 3 x 5 inches, and 2 pieces that measure 2 x 3 inches.

Step 6: Put the 2 pieces of fabric that are 3 x 5 inches right side together and sew almost all the way around but leave 2 inches unstitched so you can turn the fabric right side out. Make sure you stay stitch back and forth a couple times where you leave off to the unstitched part.

Step 7: Turn the fabric right side out, iron flat, the tuck the unstitched edges back inside the hole, and then sew along the bottom of the edge to close.

Step 8: Take the 10 x 11 inch fabric and fold it in half lengthwise so the right sides of the fabric are
facing each other and sew along the edge to create a tube.
Step 9: Turn the tube right side out and iron flat.

Step 10: Take both of the 2 x 3 inch pieces of fabric and iron 1/8th seam on both sides of the fabric for both pieces.

Step 11: Line the fabric up so that the wrong sides of each fabric are facing each other and the ironed seams are on the inside.

Step 12: Sew along each side of the fabric.

Step 13: Fold the fabric in half horizontally, sew along the unfinished edge, and then turn the fabric so the seam is on the inside of the ring.

Step 14: Thread your long and short rectangles through the ring to create your bow. Depending on how thick or thin your fabric is this step may be tricky... Stick with it though- you are almost done!

Step 15: Line your bow up on the outside of one side of the pouch- Only pin and sew it to the yellow fabric- tuck the polka dot fabric underneath the other side for this step.

Step 16: Sew along the edge of the pouch to attach the bow in place. I have found that if you pin the corners of the bow in place where they need to line up but leave the center part unpinned you can pull the fabric to the right as you are sewing to make sure it is laying correctly without any puckers.
Do this for both sides of the pouch.

Step 17: Trim the fabric so there is no excess on both sides.

Step 18: Unzip the zipper halfway... This is the MOST important step because your zipper needs to be open half way so that you can turn your pouch right side out. (this will make more sense after you complete the next few steps.)

Step 19: Pin both of the yellow pieces of fabric right side together and sew all the way around the edge.

Step 20: Pin both of the polka dot fabrics right side together and sew almost all the way around the edges. You need to leave a 3-4 inch opening in the very bottom so that you can turn your pouch right side out. Make sure that you stay stitch really well so that your seams stay together when you are turning the fabric right side out.

Step 21: Turn your bag right side out. Then tuck the unfinished edges of the polka dot fabric inside.

Step 22: Sew along the bottom of the tucked in unfinished edges to finish it up.

Step 23: Push the polka dot liner into the bag and get everything all lined up- iron out any wrinkles to finish up and you are done!

Now you have your very own "Tied with a Bow" pouch to give as a gift, or keep for yourself! ;)
