It’s here. It’s finally here! My husband Michael and I finished our family room makeover and I am thrilled to share the before and after photos with you.
Thanks to the fabulous Chip It! tool by Sherwin-Williams, we came up with a blue/yellow color scheme that brightens up our family room and is now a place where the whole family loves to hang out.
Let’s get started.
Remember these old couches and bare windows? Well, we didn’t find a sectional that we loved, so for now we have some pretty navy blue couch covers until we find exactly what we want (I can be so picky sometimes!).
We are happy with the new look!
I searched high and low for some curtains that I liked. When I saw these blue and white designed drapes I had to snag them up immediately.
I painted the walls a light gray {Sherwin-Williams Misty} using the color palette in this previous post.

Remember the old end tables?
After some sanding, priming, and Sherwin-Williams Fun Yellow paint, we had end tables that provided that pop of color I was looking for!

I grabbed some favorite fabric and whipped up a few coordinating throw pillows…

…that gave the couch and loveseat that finishing touch!
Next up??
My favorite part of this makeover process! The fireplace.
I needed bookshelves in a bad way. Michael bought a couple of Ikea bookshelves and trimmed them with molding on the top and bottom. He also created a new mantel using 4 corbels and a wooden shelf.
I absolutely love how this space turned out and now I have a place to put many books!

I had so much fun accessorizing around the Chip It! palette we chose. Most of the things I already had on hand and I spiced up with some paint and printables!

Finally, we finished the blank, boring wall!

We put up some batten and board using Sherwin-Williams Extra White, threw up recent pictures of the kids, and voila…no more boring wall!
I cannot believe the transformation in this room. Friends and family members stop by and can’t believe how different the basement looks. It’s fun to receive compliments after all of the hard work that was put into this room.
I want to give a huge thanks to BlogHer and Sherwin-Williams for giving me this opportunity to achieve my goal this year to re-do the basement. My family thanks you, too!
Make sure to check out the Chip It! Video and add the “Chip It!” button to you bookmarks bar. You will not believe how simple it is to use!

DeleteYour basement looks so inviting and great!
ReplyDeleteI'd like to redo my bedroom. It's always on the bottom of the list (behind the 50 other projects that we never have time to finish...)
Thanks so much NaDell! I hear ya...my bedroom needs help, too!
DeleteMy master bedroom is the one room that I am constantly reminded needs a makeover. I am in there every night! Imagine that. This giveaway is amazing! Thanks for telling us about it! I love love love your chip it room. The yellow and blues look awesome together! I think my favorite part is your yellow end table.
ReplyDeleteI was actually going to get rid of my old end tables and so glad I kept them...I was a little afraid to go bold with the yellow, but glad I did!! Thanks
Deletereally great!!
ReplyDeleteThank you Kim!
DeleteBasically all of the rooms in my home need remodeled/makeover. So I think I would like to chip it for our basement family room. This is the space where we watch TV and relax. I would like it to be a bit brighter, yet also cozy and relaxing. Thanks so much for the chance to win!
ReplyDeleteLove it!! I am really loving blues and yellows right now.
ReplyDeleteI just started playing with chip it this morning. I bought this picture http://artpassions.com/artists/pauline-eble-campanelli/0000038671-apple-blossoms at a garage sale this weekend for $5. It's HUGE and I LOVE it..but it has me dreaming of new paint colors and an updated living room!!!

ReplyDeleteOh dang. The living room needs some major hep over here!
ReplyDeleteI would love to use the chip it on this rug: http://www.4-chairs.com/shop/product/porcelain-rug-/ to redo my daughter's bedroom.
ReplyDeleteI would love a beautiful calm blue scene for my bedroom
ReplyDeleteWe just finished our basement last fall...but now that it's done, I am ready to re-do my upstairs--my kitchen definitely needs a makeover and this would help!
ReplyDeleteLove your end tables! I would love to do our family room it is in desperate need of some color. We have a fireplace that is dull and I am very inspired by your work with your fireplace.
ReplyDeleteThanks Erin, the end tables really brighten up the room!

I definitely want to redo my bedroom. Or I guess do it. Since no one ever sees it, it definitely has been put on the back burner when it comes to decorating. 1craftycupcake@gmail.com
ReplyDeletei would chip a photo of a foreign market in morocco or syria- i need some exotic life in my living room!
ReplyDeleteThe chip it is such a cool idea! Would def use it in our yet to be decorated bedroom!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! Can't wait to do some of that stuff to our place! I really love the color scheme you picked, too, and adding the textures with fabric and the woodwork on the wall. That fireplace just POPS now, too!
ReplyDeleteThank you! The fireplace is my very favorite part of the makeover and I have a place to put my many books!!
Deletewe just bought a 1980s house with a nice living room that has a 2-storey ceiling. it's in a sad off-white color now (BORING!) and the brick fireplace is looking drab. we are gonna bring life back to it with some nice wall and fireplace colors and new furniture & window treatments that i'm gonna sew!
ReplyDeleteFun idea! My family room really needs a makeover :)
ReplyDeleteI would use chip it to help redo my bedroom!! We have had to move in with my parents while Hubby is in school.. and it would feel good to have the only place that is ours look better! :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a transformation!! I'm a HUGE fan Sherwin Williams and their paints. I actually just used their Chip It! application on a piece of fabric this weekend. It was amazing! I determined my wall and ceiling color. Yay!! Sometimes picking paint is so stressful. Thanks so much for this chance to win. I'm going to be doing two room in my house this fall and this would be SUCH a huge help to creating the space I so desperately need. Thanks again! Your space is beautiful!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks friend! I really don't think I'll use another brand of paint again. Sherwin-Williams paint covers wonderfully. Can't wait to see your rooms this fall!
DeleteLove to chip my bathroom into something blue/fish/coastal.. thanks for the giveaway.
ReplyDeleteThis tablecloth: http://www.target.com/p/hudson-tablecloth-canyon/-/A-13274540 at Target. I want to use it to make curtains for my living room. And chip it accent wall...
ReplyDeleteLOVE your room! So cute! Great job! I have multiple areas that I would love to help, but I think i'd do my bedroom. Since my hubby and I married 6 years ago we have been students-we have 3 years left of Dental school and are in a little apartment. Our bedroom is the one room that always gets neglected. No one ever sees it and so I put all my time, money and energy into the other rooms. I'd love to make our room a beautiful sanctuary that I love to be in for more then just sleeping and changing my clothes! Thanks for the opportunity!
ReplyDeleteWHat a terrific reveal! I've been hearing about Chip it but haven't checked it out yet. Sounds so cool!
ReplyDeleteI am trying to decide how to decorate my youngest son's bedroom. I tried the chip it! tool--going to use it a lot! Heres the goal room--

I would chip a photo of Positano, Italy to redecorate our kitchen... the bright colors, especially some aqua blue and yellow of the lemons would be great to add some new life!
ReplyDeleteKari that is a gorgeous room! Well done!
ReplyDeleteI would chip the playroom downstairs. The kiddos are finally old enough that no one is, um, "adding" original art work straight on the walls any more ;)
I love your room makeover!!
ReplyDeleteIf I were to win the sweepstakes I would rip up my carpet and put in hardwood floors!!!!
My master bedroom definitely could use some help!
ReplyDeleteI'd love to paint my craft room. While it's got a great red wall in it, remnant of the room being a boy's bedroom from the previous owners, I'd really like to give the room a different look, one that's brighter and makes the room look bigger. One wall is taken by two shelving units and a window. The one wall is a fire-engine red, the other walls off-white and the trim white. You can see a bit of it here: http://jensunchartedterritory.blogspot.com/2012/01/trying-to-get-organized-again.html. I'm thinking a bright, somewhat turquoisey blue though I like the though of limiting that color to one wall for a punch. The rest of the room... maybe white with a slight tint of ... not sure. :)
ReplyDeleteI would chip out my kitchen/dinning room. Its still got nasty green carpet from the 80's in it! It needs a refresh! Jmhirst86 at gmail.com

ReplyDeleteThe Chip-It idea is awesome! I saw a picture the other day that included a light blue, gray and white color palette with pops of orange... I was a little scared of the orange but your pops of yellow have inspired me to go for it!
ReplyDeleteWho needs boring rooms? Bring on the color!
We just bought a house and the walls are all terribly beige! I have several pieces of fabric I'd love to pull colors from.
ReplyDeleteJlstan825(at)hotmail(dot)com

Oh how I would love to win this! There are so many beach pictures I'd love to pull the colors from!
ReplyDeleteThis looks great! I would LOVE to be able to give our Master bedroom/bath a makeover. We've pretty much done the whole rest of the house, and of course our room is still so shabby....isn't that the way it always works?
ReplyDeleteI love the yellow paint on your end tables. My living room is really boring to me and I would love to be able to get rid of my couch set that we've had since we were married!! I'm so ready for an update! brendaherring731(at)yahoo(dot)com
ReplyDeleteI tweeted about the giveaway https://twitter.com/randkmaddog/status/227425071940120577
ReplyDeleteMy whole house could use it. I want to paint everything and update. You have done a great job!
ReplyDeleteSo Cool! I'm going to have to explore that tool. We are just working on our basement. Not quite to the sheetrock stage, but hope to get there soon. I am most excited to paint all the rooms, and I have NO idea what color they will be. I'll have to find inspiration. I have an old plain table from a garage sale like the one you painted. I have never thought of painting it a bright color!
ReplyDeleteMy son is almost 2 years old now and his bedroom consists of tan walls and a crib. I could really use that money to decorate his room!
ReplyDeletethank you for letting me know about Chip It. I already found my craft room colors from it. I fall in love with a photo of a cottage in Ireland. I will now be using the colors from Chip It to get the colors into my craft room. thank you. you can find the pin here. https://pinterest.com/pin/209347082649394282/
ReplyDeleteWould love to be able to do this.
I would like to chip my boring bookcases and add some color and beautiful elements there and make them more stunning as yours. The wall with fireplace and bookcases looks very pretty and I love how you play around with colors.

ReplyDeleteWOW! What a great transformation. Thank you for sharing. I would like to redo my family room as well.
ReplyDeleteI love all the color, I need to definitely add some color to my life and my rooms

ReplyDeleteMy room is a disaster. We've worked on every other room in the house and there mine sits, with ugly baby blue paint and a bed. It's a sad sight :) I hope to give it some love here in the next few months. Your room looks great!
ReplyDeleteWow! We just moved & our bedroom needs some serious help! I would use the chip tool to create a sanctuary so that maybe finally my kids would understand that mommy & daddy's room is NOT the play room! ;)
ReplyDeleteWe just bought a new home and there are so many things I want to do to make it "ours". I am in the process of the guest bathroom that had navy blue walls and RED woodwork. (YUCK!)
ReplyDeleteMy next project will be the kitchen that needs updating and new lighting--really dark--when I am cooking I feel like I need a flashlight! Really!! Thanks for sharing all of your hard work. It really inspires me to keep going!
We have 5 kids soon to be 6 and are trying to do so that everything looks better and is more functional. We recently discovered we have to replace all the carpet due to mold, grrrr. ReplyDeleteI would love to redo my living room. I'm recently divorced and now live in a rental. My dream home, which I devoted many years to redecorating, was sold during the settlement. Now I'm surrounded by white walls, haven't unpacked my decorations yet, and several of my nicer pieces of furniture was damaged during the move. The company I hired to move me was unable to show up, as the owner and lead mover had a heart attack that very morning. So, I was blessed enough to have my church and friends help. But it was not an organized or smooth process! So I would use this opportunity to make my place feel like home and redo the furniture pieces to bring a much needed breath of fresh air into my life!! I have several Parisian images for inspiration. Thanks for the chance to win! smm2046@comcast.net

ReplyDeleteWhat a difference! Great makeover , I would use chip it in my living room just replaced the old picture window with a much more energy efficient one and now the room needs a facelift!
ReplyDeleteI would love to take a picture and "chip" the curtain material I bought for my daughter's room. I want to paint some accents and this sounds like the easiest way to get a match.
ReplyDeleteAn image I'd like to use is the blue ocean and sandy beach.

My daughter-in-law already has plans for my living room. The Chip It! tool sounds like a great way to pull everything together.
