Ok... Maybe I need to work on my titles. But my husband really was surprised that this worked!
My sewing room is carpeted, which means little bits and pieces of everything I make get all over the carpet. For a long time, I use to just vacuum them up. Eventually the threads would wrap around the brushes of the vacuum cause the vacuum to stop working.
Vacuum fixing falls squarely in my husband's household duties, so he'd have to pick out all those threads. Not fun. After the third (or fifth?) time, it became clear that I needed to figure out another way.
Enter our hero: The Toilet Wand!
I bought this amazing toilet brush from walmart for 1.99 and made sure that everyone in the house knew that it wasn't for toilet use. The fact that it's bent makes it that much easier to use.
Just sort of sweep it across the carpet and it will corral all the stray threads, serger trimmings and bits of fluff of off the floor.
Then those little bits are easy to pick up and throw away. It even picks up pins that have disappeared into the carpet.
I store mine under the ironing board (where I trim threads while pressing) and do a quick sweep of the area before vacuuming. This has to be my vaccum's favorite sewing tip! (and my husband's, for that matter!)

ReplyDeleteI was wondering the same thing! My long hair destroys our vacuums more than thread does, so I may start dragging this across my carpet before I vacuum our living areas also. What a great idea! I wonder if I could modify a long handle or something so I could do large areas without breaking my back. :)

I bet it would work great for hair as well. I have really long hair, and I run my fingertips around the carpet to pick up hair before the vaccuming--so having bristles would be even quicker! Thanks for the tip (:
