Sewing Supplies I Can’t Live Without!

Many of you might be learning to sew this year or might want to learn but are wondering what sewing tools you need!

Today I’m showing you 10 sewing supplies I can’t live without!

top ten favorite sewing supplies

1. Sewing Machine. I purchased this Singer sewing machine {limited edition} on HSN last year. I fell in love with the vintage look and the modern features.

2. Head Pins. I use these pins every single time I sew and I love them. They help things from sliding around and assure straighter sewing!

3. Sewing Scissors. I make sure to have a fabulous pair of scissors when I’m cutting fabric. I never use them to cut paper or other craft mediums…I save these for sewing projects only!

4. Seam Ripper. Unfortunately, I use one of these pretty much every time I sit down at the sewing machine. It is fabulous and fixing mistakes!!

5. Clear Quilting Ruler. Without this baby I wouldn’t be able to cut my fabric in a straight line. The length is wonderful for my cutting mat, too!

6. Self Healing Cutting Mat. I LOVE the huge 24x36 size and whenever I have a sewing craft night everybody wants to borrow it! Definitely a must-have.

7. Rotary Cutter. This nifty tool makes cutting a breeze! I also love how easy the refill blades are to switch out!

8. Serger. If you want to save time on your sewing projects a serger is for you! You don’t need to finish your edges with pinking sheers or a zig zag stitch. Has so many uses!

9. Tabletop Ironing Board. Everytime I sew, I use an iron. It’s right next to the sewing machine table and is just the right size for most of my sewing projects…easy to store and put away, too!

10. Iron. Like I said, an iron is a must….especially for quality sewing! This Singer is a wonderful iron with 9 different heat settings and different steam features. Love it!

Tell me….what would be on your list of favorite sewing supplies?

  7. I have a tiny rotary cutter that I use all the time. I use it to cut out patterns. It gets into the tight corners and curves so easily. I also love a hemmer foot for the sewing machine. It is a fast way to add a beautiful hem to projects.

    1. Cara,
I've never had a really nice machine and didn't realize what I was missing out on. I actually paid $300-ish, I saw an awesome deal on HSN and had to have it! It threads by itself, comes with lots of feet, and I'm still learning all of the features!

  9. Magnetic pin cushion!! When I pull my pins out as I sew I just toss them in the general direction of my magnetic pin cushion and it just sucks them right in :) Can't sew with out it!

    1. Hello! Why didn't I mention pin cushion??...and magnetic?...even better!

  10. I second Sarah... it HAS to be magnetic- as cute as pincushions can get, none are as convenient and practical as the magnetic ones. And disappearing pens... LOVE those. Great list, Kari! Every item is a must-have for me too.

  12. I use all of those, and I use my tweezers all of the time. Not just for the serger, but to help hold the thread when I'm threading the machine needles - even with an automatic needle threader. I also use several different sizes of scissors. It depends on what I am making.

    1. Shirley, Yes! Scissors make all of the difference. When I'm stitching I love my little precision ones!

  13. I always keep a washable glue stick with my sewing stuff. Yep, just like the ones we used in school. I use it for things like attaching pockets. A little bit of glue and then press them down. It dries from the ironing, holds them in place so you nice straight stitches, and then washes out when you you throw them in the washing machine.

I would add a pair of snips for hand sewing on the move (also great for knitting on the move) and threats!
