I have wanted to give my old cedar chest a modern facelift for a while now, but I couldn’t decide what to do with it. I am not a very bold person when it comes to decorating. In fact, I am pretty neutral and bland to be perfectly honest. I would love to change that and get a bit more daring…but, I don’t know if I am THAT darling. Until recently…
I was given the opportunity to review an exclusive HGTV Home Décor Fabric line from Joann Fabric & Craft. I received a package with 2 different fabrics (1 yard of each), a yard of trim, and the latest issue of HGTV magazine. Right when I saw the grey Circling fabric I knew it was time to be bold and give my old cedar chest a makeover!
Here is the old cedar chest. Please don’t judge or laugh too hard, but you can see it totally needs to be made pretty again.
First I took the hardware off the front and the cushion off the top. I even took off the wooden medallion thing in the front.
Re-Upholster the Cushion:
I got my little handheld upholstery stapler, plenty of staples and a Leatherman tool.
I ripped off the old (nasty) fabric and took all the staples out of the wood. Luckily the cushion was still in good shape even though the fabric was a mess.
With a hot iron, I ironed my yard of grey “Circling” HGTV Home Décor Fabric.
Then I cut the fabric 2 inches wider than the cushion & board all the way around. I didn’t need this much, but it’s better to be safe than sorry, right?
Starting in the middle of a long side of the board, I pulled the fabric tight and stapled it to the board. I did about 5 inches on one side and then pulled it tight across the front and stapled the other side about 5 inches. I did this all the way around. The corner can be a bit tricky and bulky so I cut a triangle out of the corner to reduce the bulk BEFORE I stapled it down.
No need to spare the staples! I used plenty to make sure the fabric would stay nice and tight.
Painting the Cedar Chest:
With 80 grit sand paper and a palm sander, I spent about an hour sanding the chest in order to get all the gunk and old stain off.
Then with some 110 grit sand paper, I went over chest again to make it nice and smooth and ready for paint.
Like I said, I wanted to go bold so I got 2 cans of BRIGHT YELLOW spray paint and used every drop. It took two coats to get the bright color and coverage I wanted…and I LOVE IT!
Painting the Hardware:
I went to 4 stores to find the perfect hardware before I discovered no such hardware existed. As a DIY gal, I would just create the perfect hardware. Thanks to a can of teal spray paint, I transformed the existing hardware into new hardware.
When all the paint was dry, I reassembled the cedar chest.
I LOVE IT. What do you think? Quite the transformation, huh?
I am thrilled with how bold and beautiful this project turned out. The gorgeous Circling Pewter fabric really gave me the inspiration I needed to finally give my cedar chest the makeover it needed.
