Hi there U Create readers! My name is Katie Lewis and I'm happy to be here sharing a fun and simple tutorial for Classic Play Wands today!
I write regularly on my blog, The Red Kitchen, where you'll find a mix of craft and sewing tutorials, thoughts on life, and the occasional recipe. I have a 2 1/2 year-old daughter (who has already confiscated the wand in these pictures) and a wonderful husband.
Okay, on with the fun!
- star pattern pieces
- 1 piece yellow felt
- 1 piece orange felt
- 1 wooden dowel (5/16" x 12")
- sewing machine
- sewing scissors
- hot glue gun & glue
Note: I used regular cheap craft felt here since that's what I had on hand, but wool felt would probably hold up better.
Step 1: Print & cut pattern
Click here or on the image above to view and print the star pattern pieces.
Step 2: Cut stars from felt
Cut 2 yellow stars using the large star pattern.
Cut 1 orange star using the small star pattern.
Step 3: Sew small star to large star
Sew around the orange star using an 1/8" seam allowance.
Step 4: Sew large stars together
Starting about a 1/2" away from the center bottom of the star, sew around the yellow stars using an 1/8" seam allowance. DO NOT sew all the way around. Leave an opening (about a finger width) at the bottom of the star.
Here's the back.
Step 5: Add stuffing
Open the small opening at the bottom of the star.
Add stuffing, starting with each of the points of the star and then filling in the middle.
Step 6: Add dowel
Insert dowel through the opening at the bottom of the star.
The top of the dowel should reach about the middle of the star.
Step 7: Glue star & dowel together
Carefully use your hot glue gun to add glue around the dowel, just inside the opening in the star.
Press star opening and dowel together so the glue keeps everything closed.
Go use those imaginations and enjoy the magic of childhood!
