Help me update my kitchen!

Hi Friends, I have a favor.  I need your advice/opinion!  But first let me give you some background.  My husband and I built our current home in 2005 and although we love it, it still looks like we just moved in.  I am finally ready to make it look incredible and have some time to do the DIY stuff that needs to be done.  This brings me to my need for help from you…

See this bare kitchen above.  I want it to look amazing.  Like the ones you expect from a DIY/craft blogger. :)  I would love to paint the cabinets, add hardware, create matching bar stools, perhaps paint the bar a separate color, and add a black splash!  See! That is a lot of work.  My question to you is about the backsplash.  I have NO idea what to do for that.  Have you seen something fantastic I could try?  Do you have a brilliant idea for me? Please leave a comment/link and help me update my boring kitchen!

The coolest thing happened while I was contemplating my "blah" kitchen: the awesome people from MOEN contacted me with the opportunity to change my faucet with a new product!  I was thrilled. Not only had mine been broken for 6 months, but it was shiney chrome that attracted water like a magnet.  I was able to replace it with this beauty:

FYI: This faucet is the MOEN Indi Single-Handled Kitchen Faucet.  It's really cool because it has a SPOT RESIST finish so you don't get finger prints and water spots!  YES!  Also this faucet has a MICROBAN technology to help prevent growth of bacteria on the finish. So cool, right?  You can get one here!

So, will you help me decide on a backsplash?  I would love to see what you would do if this were your kitchen!

  1. I've seen people get the back of acrylic printed & use that as a splash back. That way you could do whatever you would want. Structures, nature (bright green grass? Wood? Flower leaves? Water? Clouds? Could be fun.

    1. Ruth, I love that idea! I have never thought of the nature look. Something to think about!

  2. I think you should really decide on what to do about the cabinets before choosing backsplash...
Do you want to keep the wood - simply make it lighter, darker, more red, almost black? Or maybe paint them white, light grey or colorful?
If you know what direction to go - choose backsplash! Maybe (like the previous comment says) a pattern of grass or trees or stones or something? Or a simple colourful pattern, like bricks or something geometric?
I think it's easiest to start with choosing one item, or color, and then go from there. For exampe, in my kicthen I think GREEN (because that's the color of the walls, which I'm not allowed to change since it's a rental) which makes all purchases and changes easier...
    Sorry about the too-long comment!

    1. I think you are right? I need to choose a cabinet look first. I am pretty sure I want to lighten things up a bit. Maybe paint the cabinets white with some fun knobs! I just hate how bare the walls look. Maybe I am jumping the gun a bit on the backsplash, huh?

    2. I don't think you're jumping the gun... just maybe that it could end up really bad if you first made a backsplash and later decided on a clashing cabinet... :)
So I'm not saying you should wait with the backsplash, as long as you decide on the color of everything else first! (White sounds really good, and fun knobs are always amazing, my house is full of them...)

  3. Do you want to keep the wood color? If so, I would just add some handles that would make a big difference. But...if you don't mind losing the wood color. I would paint it white, add some darker handles, you could add some bead board (or the wallpapered kind) to the ends of the cabinets (where there are no doors). Then add the backsplash that wouldn't clash with your countertops. I love the glass mosaic tiles...which are super easy. I'd also add the beadboard to the knee space under the island.

    1. Great ideas!!! Totally going to add some beadboard/wallpaper stuff to the island for sure! That would change it up a bit. Thank you for commenting!

  4. we painted our cabinets and used small mosaic tiles for the back splash, and I just love how it came out! http://www.sugarbeecrafts.com/2012/07/diy-kitchen-remodel-big-reveal.html

  6. I've always wanted to do glass a glass backsplash. Just glass anchored to the wall so a fun wall color can shine through but you still get the protection and sheen of glass.

  7. I saw this square mosaic tile once that was white and grey and had mother of pearl in it so out just sparkled. It was so pretty. Especially if you want to lighten up.
