Hello UCreate Friends!
I am Desirée from The 36th Avenue and I am so excited to be back visiting one of my top favorite blogs!
Thank you Kari for having me!
I am sharing today the tutorial of how to turn a regular pillow into two throw pillows.
This is a perfect little project to recycle old pillows or to save good money specially on down throw pillows,
since you can pay anywhere between $25 and $50 for just one insert.
MATERIALS
Basically all you’ll need is a king size pillow, scissors, pins and a sewing machine.
TIP: You can purchase super affordable pillows at your local HomeGoods Stores or TJMax.
You can buy two king size pillows and make four down pillows for about $20… That is a good deal!
TUTORIAL
1
First using scissors cut your pillow right in half.
Nothing fancy!
2
Push the filling of your pillow in with your hands as much as you can.
3
Keep the filling inside of the case and out of the way pining the fabric together.
You want to have at least a 2.5″ piece of empty fabric to work with for the next step.
After the pinning it should look like this…
4
Close to the edge of the fabric, seal the pillow together.
More space you leave to work with… easier the sewing will be.
5
Remove your pins and distribute the filling evenly again with your hands.
Make it puffy!
You are done!
I do this all the time!
It saves me a lot of money and I can get high quality pillow inserts for a fraction of the cost.
After I was done with the inserts I could not resist to make some cute pillow cases for them.
I hope you take a minute to visit with me on my blog and take a look!
Thank you again Kari for having me…
I love hanging out here!
Have a great day everybody!
Desirée.

This is such a great idea! It’s definitely one of those, “Why didn’t I think of that?” moments! Thanks for sharing!
I know right?! Gotta love that fabulous Desiree!! 🙂
Seriously…..why can’t I be this genius?! Definitely an “ah-ha” moment!! Such a great idea!
Great idea! Thanks for sharing.
Brilliant!
Great idea!
Thanks for sharing! Fabulous idea.
wondering if also pinning the pillow, then cutting, would make the re-stuffing a little easier? thoughts anyone?
and I absolutely LOVE this !!!!
Wow, I love this! I’m needing more throw pillows in my house but didn’t have inserts, this is the perfect solution!
Genius! This is such a great idea especially for someone like me who keeps ending up with stupid extra pillows. My pillows are multiplying for some reason. I am getting ready to make some toss pillows for the living room & will have to do this! 🙂
I love this! I just bought fabric to make new throw pillows and needed to buy the inserts. I’m doing this for sure! Thanks!
Ditto everyone else! GENIUS!
This just made me want to snuggle up on the couch with a bunch of fluffy pillows – love it! 🙂
I do this very thing with body pillows. Three overstuffed pillow forms for $3 apiece – can’t beat it!
What an awesome idea! Thanks for sharing!
What a great tutorial. Thanks for sharing. Have a great weekend.

I love this! I’ve been doing this for about a year now to save money on throw pillows!!!
I am making “movie watching pillows” for all of my nieces and nephews for Christmas this year. Pillow forms can get pricy so I am really thankful I came across this blog! Thank you for your great idea! 6 pillows at less than $3 a piece!
Ha! This is totally one of those WHY DID I THINK OF THAT moments. Also, love your name 😉 Obvs.
Totally brilliant! I have a bunch of pillows in my future and you just saved me a bundle! Thanks!
One of those moments that you think to yourself, “why didn’t I think of that?”. Then I realize, Oh! It’s because I’m not Desi! You are amazing! Great idea!
can you leave them white, coverless if I wanted to paint something on them? or are they too cheap of a material to use as the cover?
The fabric on the pillow is very thin so I would definitely suggest a cover. You could do a white cover and paint on it 🙂
Thank you so much for sharing. What a great idea! I have heard that people make pillows out of Grandpa’s shirts after he dies, this would make it all so much more affordable.
This is a fun idea, and I find it easier to separate the halves with a yardstick, then pin first, before cutting. But, I would *never* try this with a down pillow, unless you pin and sew two seams down the middle before cutting between them. Cutting a real down pillow in half would cause a sewing room disaster of Disney proportions! ????
I’m so glad you mentioned this! Yes, I wouldn’t try this with a down pillow either. Thanks for bringing that up so I can add it to the post!
