Today I’m showing you how to give an artificial tree that flocked, snowy look in no time. I love this technique because you can control how “snowy” you want your tree to be simply by adding a little bit of paint or applying it more generously.
I decided to try this idea because I wanted a “lightly flocked” look and most stores only had a heavy snow version. I was surprised at how easy this was with only 3 items:
- white acrylic paint
- glitter
- paint brush
Now you’re ready to begin!
First, you’re going to grab your white paint and glitter. I used the Creatology Glitter brand and Folk Art in Wicker White. You can use any brand you’d like.
Have left-over paint from painting your trim or walls? Feel free to use that, too!
There are only TWO steps … super simple!
Brush on the white paint lightly by bouncing the paintbrush vertically on the tree. Make sure to avoid painting the lights (you may want to use a smaller brush, too}!
CRAFT TIP: Make sure to start at the top and work your way down because the glitter can be very messy.

Sprinkle on the snowy glitter pretty generously to give it that “just like snow” look.
IMPORTANT: Make sure to do small sections at a time so the paint doesn’t dry before you add glitter! Wet paint makes the glitter stick.
Repeat the above steps until you have your tree just the way you like it.
Now you have a gorgeous lightly flocked tree ready to decorate with ornaments, garland, packages, and more!
This year I added peppermint and snowflake themed ornaments to my tree and I love how it turned out, especially with the faux snow!
Make sure to hop on over and see my Peppermint and Snow themed tree…
How you say…….? G-O-R-G-E-O-U-S?!!!!! Why couldn’t you do this on a real tree? That is SOOOO pretty. You’re makin me want to go buy an artificial tree JUST to flock it!

Thank you Chelle!
I love my flocked tree, I also added pinecones. PS Chelle, you can get live trees flocked at many nurseries in the USA. I haven’t found anyone in Canada, but they are gorgeous and sometimes you can even get them flocked in colours.
Oh my goodness! You are awesome! I soooooo wanted a flocked tree last year but it was way out of my price range. I already had a new tree and couldn’t justify buying another one. I’ve racked my brain for a year on how do to the fake snow without using spray fake snow. You’re the best and you made my day. I can’t wait now to do my tree this way. I may even bring my poor, neglected blog back to life to show you my tree.
Thanks so much. Again, you are DA BOMB!
Debbie
You’re too kind!
It’s a great way to spice up an old tree…I love how it turned out!
It’s pretty fun, too…took about 2 hours.
wow!!! love this great tip!! would have never even thought of doing anything like this. I have a plain green tree and really wanted one that looked like it had snow on it, thanks to you Now I don’t have to buy a new one!!! Pinned
Yes, don’t buy a new one! It’s so simple. I accidentally paint a few bulbs on accident but the paint scraped right off!
Have fun!
I absolutely adore this clever idea. And I’m all for some simple, on the cheap projects that had this kind of result. Looooove it!
Simple and inexpensive? My favorite kind of crafts!!
Beautiful!!!!
Thanks Gina!
I was thrilled with how it turned out and can’t wait to show you the decorated Christmas tree!
Love it!!!! I’m gonna try this on some wreaths that look super fake. I think the flocking will bring them alive! Thanks so much for sharing!!!!
Janis, I’m going to flock a couple of wreaths, too! So simple and you are welcome!
Your tree is absolutely beautiful!!!!! I’m inspired\
Thanks, Vikki
Thank you Vikki!!
Gorgeous!!! You have amazing talent! Thanks for making this fabulous idea available to us! I cannot wait to do mine, but I was wondering if you have any thoughts about storage after the season is over? Are you going to do anything special with it?
Thanks Kari!
Good question! I plan on storing it the same way as I normally do {it will easily fold up in the box}.
Thanks Cindy!
do you start at the top or bottom
I started at the top, but you could do either way!
This is gorgeous!! What color glitter did you use? Silver? White?
I love this! It’s gorgeous! The whole tree!! I love peppermint decorations! So…what color glitter did you use? Silver? White? Something else?
2 steps? Awesome. It turned out fabulous Kari!! xo
What a gorgeous tree!! I love your idea but I can still see glitter getting over everything and sometimes missing the wet paint. Since you used a brush and put the white paint on first and then sprinkle the glitter on, what about combining the two first make glitter paint? Do you think the effect would be the same?
Oh….I love it!
Elizabeth
This is so clever! I am pinning!!!
Super cute tree! Love how it turned out!
Such a great idea!! It looks better than the ones at the store!!
So creative!!
So creative!!
I love it! (Silver or white glitter?)
Thanks!!
I looooove it!! starting todat!!
I looooooove it!! starting today:)
Thank you for making it easy o flock a christmas tree, i have looked at a lot of ideas yours was the best and easiest and the smartest
I was just wondering how the tree has held up. Is it still as pretty and white or did it turn that awful yellow color?
it’s actually just as white as when I first painted it! Great question Liz! Thanks for asking
sounds like a great idea, I’ve been looking for fake branches that already had a fake snow on them to use for making my artificial wreaths I like making. I’ve had a couple I’ve found with just a little snow here and there. They turned out nice, but still wanted more snow on the whole wreath! This may do the trick? I”m looking forward to giving it a try! thanks for the great idea!
This is my favourite I really love this unfortunately I live in nl so i do not have access to the beautiful decorations such an amazing job on this tree
