Add some sparkle to your Christmas Tree…with Spray Paint!

Add sparkle to the Christmas tree at U-createcrafts.com

Do you remember the pretty Christmas Tree I created as part of the 2nd Annual Michaels Dream Tree Challenge?  Well, when I set up my tree and put my gorgeous glittery gold and silver ornaments by it, the tree looked very green.  Too green for the theme I was going for.  So I decided to add some glitter to the actual tree in order to tone down the green.  However, I was stumped at how to actually do this without it creating a huge mess.  I wanted the glitter to stay on the tree really well and not fall off onto my carpet throughout the month.  Then I remembered a seriously sparkly spray paint I used a long time ago by Krylon called Glitter Blast.  I knew Michael’s carried this paint so I ran back to the store and grabbed 10 CANS of it.

Glitter Blast from Krylon

I set my tree up in the middle of the garage and made my husband park in the driveway for a couple of days.  My children were recruited to shake the rattle cans while I applied the spray paint.  Decorating the tree is a family activity, right?

Starting at the top, I began blasting the tree with silver glitter.  It was awesome!  Even the air was filled with glitter…don’t worry, I wore a mask.

Before and After Before and After Glitter Tree

In the pictures above you can definitely see a difference with the Glitter Blast and without it.  At this point, I knew I was going to LOVE this tree.  {I always get scared that my ideas will flop and not turn out how my brain imagines it will.}  Twenty-four hours and 10 cans of spray paint later, I was ready to bring my glorious tree inside.  I was fearful the glitter would flake off as we (by “we” I mean my husband) brought it inside, but that wasn’t the case at all.  Even through me shoving decorations and twigs into it, the tree retained it’s sparkle!

I am thrilled with the results!  There are so many different colors of this Glitter Blast at Michael’s Crafts.  I will definitely be using this stuff more often.

Nope, the paint didn’t affect the lights at all. I thought it might.

Very cool. I just used that glitter spray for the first time the other day on some Halloween costume shoes. Can’t wait to try it on my tree!

was your tree one of the ones with the lights already on it? did the sparkle affect the lights? I so want a flocked tree but my family would think I lost my marbles. your sparkle paint just might satisfy my urge!

My tree is pre-lit and the glitter didn’t affect the tree at all. It looks great!

Is this a flammable paint? Did you have a pre-lit tree? If so, did the lights still work? I don’t want to burn my house down.

The paint does say that it is flammable. My tree is pre-lit and everything works great even after I sprayed the tree (and the lights). I haven’t unplugged my tree since December 1st and haven’t had a problem with any fire danger. Great questions!
