Dutch Oven Ham and Cheese Potatoes

Award Winning Dutch Oven Ham and Cheese Potatoes u-createcrafts.com

I have to admit I’m not a huge camper, but my family absolutely loves it! My favorite part about camping is probably the Dutch Oven Challenge that my family has every year. A winning recipe? These dutch oven ham and cheese potatoes that are a cinch to make!

DUTCH OVEN HAM AND CHEESE POTATOES

INGREDIENTS:

  • 8-10 medium potatoes (peeled and diced)
  • 1 onion
  • 2 cups diced ham
  • 1 pound of grated cheese ( I use mild cheddar)
  • 1 can cream of mushroom soup
  • salt and pepper
  • dutch oven

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Layer onions, potatoes, and ham in dutch oven.
  2. Add soup and salt/pepper to taste. Cover for about 2 hours.
  3. Check on it and stir occasionally so it will cook evenly.
  4. When potatoes look done add a layer of cheese on top.
  5. When cheese is completely melted it’s ready to serve!

Enjoy and watch this dish be the first to disappear at your next family event! Great for camping trips, family reunions, potluck parties, and more!

Variations:
-add cooked bacon instead of ham
-used scalloped potatoes instead of diced

I’ve actually never made these in the kitchen, but I know many people use their dutch ovens inside their ovens and not just outdoors 🙂

It depends on the size of your dutch oven but for our 12″ we used about 9 on the bottom and 15 on top. 🙂

Kari, this looks so yummy! I want to try it in the slow cooker as we don’t have any camping plans yet for summer. Do you think I should do on High for a couple of hours? Thanks!! Jen http://www.satsumadesigns.com

I’ve actually never tried this in a slow cooker so I’m not sure how it would turn out. Please let me know if you try it and how it works for you! Thanks!

Came across your recipe this morning and, since I had all the ingredients, I thought I’d try it. Used my Le Creuset Dutch Oven at 350˚ and added some peppers. Cooked for about 1:20. Delish with a fried egg on top.
